Chennai, June 12, 2025: In a first for India, SIMS Hospital successfully performed a single-stage hybrid procedure combining an intraoperative transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) with the Frozen Elephant Trunk (FET) technique, a major open-heart surgery used to replace a damaged portion of the aorta with a specialised graft, on a 61-year-old patient from Mumbai who had previously undergone a complex cardiac procedure eleven years ago. During the 10-hour marathon hybrid surgery the patient was on heart-lung bypass for over 4 hours, and his heart was stopped for 2 hours to facilitate surgical steps.

The surgery was uneventful, and the patient was discharged just eight days after surgery, following a two-day stay in the ICU.

The FET procedure involves placing a hybrid graft, a combination of a surgical graft and a stent graft, resembling an elephant’s trunk. The upper portion replaces the aortic arch, while the lower stented part extends into the descending aorta and remains in place.

The patient had undergone Bentall surgery, a complex cardiac procedure where damaged aorta and aortic valve is removed and replaced with a composite graft and reattaching the coronary arteries to the new graft. The surgery was done on an emergency basis. Although the initial surgery was successful, the untackled parts of the aorta gradually dilated over time, increasing the risk of rupture and requiring further intervention. Additionally, his tissue valve had become severely narrowed and calcified. Together, the significantly enlarged aorta and the heavily calcified valve made this one of the most complex cardiac cases in India.

In his comments Dr. V.V. Bashi, Director & Senior Consultant at the Institute of Cardiac & Advanced Aortic Diseases, SIMS Hospita l said, “Combining intraoperative catheter-based valve implantation with aortic arch repair is the first successful case in India of a TAVR and FET surgery performed for a redo Bentall patient. We had to perform two distinct procedures in a single sitting, as the patient had virtually no other treatment options. This groundbreaking approach demanded a delicate balance between precision and innovation. It was made possible by the collective expertise of our multidisciplinary team, including senior cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac anaesthetists, specialist cardiac nurses, perfusionists, and technical staff. I’m extremely proud that we’ve demonstrated what’s possible when surgical boldness is matched with meticulous team planning.”

He further added that this procedure, “In high-risk aortic surgeries, this new approach enhances patient safety by significantly reducing bypass time and the duration of cardiac arrest. After surgery, the patient will remain on lifelong blood pressure medications. However, long-term use of blood thinners is not required.”

In his comments Dr. Mohammed Idhrees, Senior consultant, cardiothoracic surgery, SIMS Hospital said, “One of the most difficult cardiac cases in India was performed in a hybrid procedure. The surgery was precisely planned to execute, and the team faced absolutely no difficulties. The patient showed great courage and unwavering support which resulted in faster recovery. This case is noteworthy because it combined a TAVR and Frozen Elephant Trunk repair during a high-risk redo after a prior Bentall —yet everything was accomplished in a single, seamless surgery.”

Star Cinemas Mukesh T Chelliah produces ‘Kombuseevi’ directed by Ponram, starring Supreme Star Sarathkumar and Shanmugapandian, with musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja

Vijayakanth was fondly called Captain by his fans, supporters and the public. A top star, he used to provide delicious food and new clothes to the entire film crew on the completion of the shooting of each of his movies.

Now, Vijayakanth’s son Shanmugapandian has done something special that would earn him the sobriquet Chinna Captain. He has honoured the entire film crew of his upcoming movie ‘Kombuseevi’ by providing new clothes and sumptuous biriyani on the occasion of the completion of the shoot.

Speaking about this, Shanmugapandian said, “My father was the one who helped everyone with the motto of ‘We will do whatever we can for those who need help’. Following in his footsteps, I shared food and clothes as a small gift to the crew who worked hard for the film ‘Kombuseevi’ today.”

Ponram, who has made a mark for himself by directing successful commercial films like ‘Varutha Padatha Valibar Sangam’, ‘Rajini Murugan’, ‘Seemaraja’, ‘MGR Magan’ and ‘DSP’, is directing ‘Kombuseevi’.

For the first time, Ponram has joined forces with music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja for this film, which marks the maiden combination of Supreme Star Sarathkumar and Shanmugapandian.

The film, which is going to be an exciting journey with comedy and action scenes in equal proportion, will be a commercial carnival. It is being produced by Mukesh T Chelliah under Star Cinemas banner in a huge budget. The film’s shoot which commenced in Theni was wrapped up in Chennai today.

Newcomer Tharnika plays the heroine. Starring Sujith Shankar, Kalki, Munishkanth, Kali Venkat and George Mariyan among others, the movie has Balasubramaniam doing the cinematography, Dinesh handling the editing, Saravana Abiram taking care of art direction. The film talks about the villages around Theni, Andipatti and Usilampatti and the life of the people there. The movie will be full of action and comedy sequences that are unique to director Ponram.

Shooting for ‘Kombuseevi’ produced by Star Cinemas Mukesh T Chelliah and directed by Ponram, starring Sarathkumar and Shanmugapandian is complete and the post-production works will be done soon to release the movie in theatres at the earliest.

Speaking at the event, Jet Krishnakutty, Regional Head of Jio Studios, remarked, “When Ram narrated the story, I connected with it immediately. We are proud to present this film. It has the emotional weight and relatability to strike a chord with audiences across India.”

Director Ram shared, “This story is deeply personal. It is about flawed, ordinary people and extraordinary feelings. Initially, Yuvan Shankar Raja was to compose the music, but due to scheduling conflicts and the volume of songs, we brought in Santhosh Narayanan, who did a phenomenal job.”

Actor Mirchi Shiva, in an emotionally resonant tone, said, “This role pushed me into unfamiliar territory. Ram sir is a director who brings out unseen layers in actors. I am grateful for this opportunity, and I believe this is a turning point in my acting journey.”

Actress Grace Antony added, “This was a unique role for me, both emotional and comedic. Shiva sir taught me a lot on set, and working under Ram sir was both fun and enlightening.

A Musical Highlight

Composer Santhosh Narayanan composed nearly 20 songs for the film. “I learned a new way of seeing cinema and sound under Ram sir,” he said. The songs are emotionally layered and situationally rich.

Lyricist Madhan Karky wrote 25 songs, of which 19 are featured in the film. One of them, sung by Siddharth, is described as a “sweet surprise.” Notably, this film features Karky’s 1000th song, a remarkable milestone in his career. “The film explores the emotional triangle between a brother, his wife, and a child. The humor is subtle, the emotions powerful,” said Karky.

Actor Siddharth said, “Ram is a masterful storyteller. His stories are rooted in truth. I’m glad to have sung in this beautiful film. It’s light-hearted yet deep, and family audiences will enjoy it thoroughly.”

Producer Arun Viswa shared, “I take more pride in saying I’m Ram sir’s assistant than a producer. He predicted a decade ago that I would turn producer before director—and here we are.”

Industry veterans and filmmakers including Kalaipuli S. Thanu, Mari Selvaraj, Mysskin, Suresh Kamatchi, Meera Kathiravan, and Ranjith Jayakodi extended their best wishes and shared their admiration for the film.

Mari Selvaraj called it “a festive celebration for our family,” while Mysskin humorously said he now receives so many invites to events that he may have to charge ₹5 lakhs per appearance — but that Parandhu Po is truly a film worth supporting. A Family Film with a Universal Heart

பாடலாசிரியர் மதன் கார்க்கி, “ராமுடன் இணைந்து நான் பணியாற்றிய படங்கள் அனைத்தும் எனக்குப் பிடித்தவை. ‘பறந்து போ’ படத்தில் வேறு ஒரு ராம் சாரைப் பார்த்தேன். இந்தப் படத்திற்கு மொத்தம் 25 பாடல்கள் எழுதினேன். அதில் 19 பாடல்கள் படத்தில் அமைந்துள்ளது. நடிகர் சித்தார்த்தும் இந்தப் படத்தில் ஒரு பாடல் பாடியிருக்கிறார். அண்ணன், மனைவி, மகன் என மூன்று உலகங்களுக்குள் நடக்கும் இணைப்பு- போராட்டம்தான் இந்தக் கதை. மெல்லிய சிரிப்பு இந்தப் படம் முழுக்க இருக்கும். என்னுடைய 1000 ஆவது பாடல் இந்தப் படத்தில் எழுதியிருக்கிறேன். நன்றி”.

மாஸ்டர் மிதுன், “இந்த வாய்ப்பு கொடுத்த ராம் அங்கிளுக்கும் படக்குழுவினர் அனைவருக்கும் நன்றி”.

தயாரிப்பாளர் கலைப்புலி எஸ். தாணு, “படம் வெற்றி பெற படக்குழுவினருக்கு வாழ்த்துக்கள்”.

இயக்குநர் ரஞ்சித் ஜெயக்கொடி, “’வீட்டுக்கு வெளியே ஒரு உலகம் உண்டு. அதைத்தெரிந்து கொள்ள நீங்கள் பயணம் செய்ய வேண்டும்’ என ஜெயமோகனின் ஒரு வரி உண்டு. அதை ராம் சாரின் படங்களில் பார்க்கலாம். மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் குடும்பத்துடன் பார்க்கும்படியான படம் இது. படம் சிறப்பாக வந்துள்ளது. நன்றி!”.

தயாரிப்பாளர் சுரேஷ் காமாட்சி, “என் திரைப்பயணத்தில் மாரி செல்வராஜ், ராமுடன் பணியாற்றிய நாட்கள் மிக மகிழ்ச்சியான நாட்கள் என்பேன். ‘பேரன்பு’ பார்த்துவிட்டு இரண்டு நாட்கள் நான் தூங்காமல் இருந்தேன். எனக்கு மிகப்பிடித்த படம் இது. ‘பறந்து போ’ எல்லோருக்கும் பிடித்த படமாக இருக்கும். இந்தப் படத்தில் சிவா மிகப்பெரிய வெற்றி பெற வேண்டும் என வாழ்த்துகிறேன். கிரேஸ், சந்தோஷ் தயாநிதி, மதன் கார்க்கி எனப் படக்குழுவினர் அனைவருக்கும் வாழ்த்துக்கள்” என்றார்.

நடிகை வேணி, ” ராம் சாருடன் பணியாற்றியது மறக்க முடியாத அனுபவம். செட்டில் பல நாட்கள் ஜாலியாக இருக்கும். எல்லோரும் நன்றாக பார்த்துக் கொண்டார்கள். நன்றி”.

இயக்குநர் மீரா கதிரவன், “இந்தப் படம் பார்த்ததும் என் குழந்தைகளையும் பயணம் அழைத்து செல்ல வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம் தோன்றியது. எனக்கு மட்டுமல்ல, எல்லா பெற்றோருக்கும் இந்தப் படம் பார்த்ததும் அந்த எண்ணம் தோன்றும். வீட்டுக்குள் அடைந்திருப்பது பெரும் சாபம். அதுவும் கொரோனா காலக்கட்டத்திற்கு பிறகு குழந்தைகளின் உளவியல் சிதைந்து போயிருக்கிறது. குழந்தைகளுக்காக தான் நாம் வாழ்க்கையில் ஓடுகிறோம். ஆனால், குழந்தைகளை அவர்களின் உலகத்துடன் வைத்துக் கொள்கிறோமா என்பது கேள்விதான். இது அனைவரையும் மாற்றும் படமாக இருக்கும். நிச்சயம் பாருங்கள்”.

இயக்குநர் மாரி செல்வராஜ், “‘பறந்து போ’ படம் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்தது. படப்பிடிப்பு தளத்திற்கு சென்று போய் பார்க்க முடியாதது எனக்கு வருத்தம். காமெடி படங்கள் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்கும். அதை பலமுறை பார்த்து நினைவில் வைத்து பேசி மகிழ்ந்திருக்கிறோம். எங்கள் வாழ்க்கையை மாற்றிய தருணம் ஈழப்பிரச்சினை தான். அதில் இருந்துதான் படத்திலும் தீவிரமாக பேச ஆரம்பித்தோம். இல்லை என்றால் நான் ‘களவாணி’ போன்ற கமர்ஷியல் கிராமத்துப் படங்களைக் கொடுத்திருப்போம். சின்ன வயதில் நான் வாழாத வாழ்க்கையை இந்த படம் சொல்லி இருக்கிறது. தான் உருவாக்கும் கதாபாத்திரங்களில் பொய் இருக்கக் கூடாது என்று நினைப்பவர் ராம். இந்தப் படம் எங்கள் குடும்பத்தின் திருவிழா. ‘வாழை’ படத்தைக் கொண்டாடியது போலவே ரசிகர்கள் நிச்சயம் ‘பறந்து போ’ படத்தையும் கொண்டாடுவார்கள்” என்றார்.

Grace Foundation in association with Utopia Therapy invites passionate film makers to register and participate in “Say No to Alcohol” Awareness Documentary Contest and become a voice for positive change. The documentary contest is an open call for students, educators, and creative minds from across all age groups in Tamil Nadu to participate and make a collective effort in fostering a drug-free State of Tamil Nadu. The Documentary with a duration of up to fifteen minutes can either be in Tamil or a silent film that integrates education and creativity to bring about awareness on fighting against substance abuse. The video should be uploaded to a Google Drive / YouTube (unlisted) link and emailed to [email protected] The last date for submission of the video link along with the participant details is July 15, 2025. Winners will be announced on August 3, 2025 and will receive cash prizes and special recognition awards along with a Trophy and a Certificate of Excellence. The winning documentaries will be screened across all schools, colleges, community levels and at social events organized by the foundation to educate, encourage and empower student participation early in life to proactively build resilience and reduce the likelihood of drug use.

Grace Foundation Launches Pioneering Preventive Care Initiative to Combat Alcohol and Substance Abuse

In a significant step towards addressing the growing crisis of alcohol and substance abuse, especially among youth, Grace Foundation was officially launched today. At the launch conference, Dr. Aathira Naevis Prabhakar, Founder of Grace Foundation and Utopia Therapy, introduced the Foundation’s ground-breaking approach centered on preventive care and education.

“In today’s fast-paced and fragmented society, we are witnessing a disturbing rise in alcohol and substance abuse, particularly among young people. What often begins as harmless experimentation quickly spirals into addiction, stealing away potential, disrupting families, and hindering societal progress,” Dr. Aathira stated.

Grace Foundation stands firm on the belief that addiction is not a moral failure but a medical condition — one that demands early intervention through preventive education. While India has developed comprehensive models for treatment and rehabilitation, preventive care, particularly in rural and school systems, remains underdeveloped.
Prevention as the Most Powerful Treatment

At the heart of Grace Foundation’s mission is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)-based visual learning programs, beginning with the “Say No to Alcohol” Awareness Documentary Contest. This innovative initiative uses the power of visual storytelling to engage young minds, shaping their thoughts, behaviours, and ultimately, their character.

“As we all know, what we see becomes our thoughts, our thoughts shape our behaviours, and behaviours define our character,” Dr. Aathira emphasized. “By influencing children early through visual learning, we are equipping them to make informed, resilient choices even in the face of peer pressure.”

The winners of the short film contest will not only be recognized for their creativity, but will also play a major role in preventive care itself. Their films will serve as ongoing educational tools, screened across schools, colleges, community centres, and social events organized by the Foundation. These powerful visual messages will contribute directly to reducing the incidence of alcohol and substance abuse by empowering students and communities with knowledge and emotional resilience.

Beyond Addiction: Addressing the Root Causes

Through Utopia Therapy, Grace Foundation also incorporates neuroscience and emotional health to address the deeper issues often underlying addiction — including emotional wounds, family trauma, and gut-brain imbalances. This holistic approach ensures that prevention is not just about avoiding substances but building stronger, healthier individuals from within.
