Makeup, once considered a frivolous hobby has now opened doors for employment opportunities. Due to its demand, there is an influx of institutes that have cropped up in every city. What sets apart a good institute from an exceptional one? An excellent makeup institute ensures that it provides a comprehensive education alongwith the need for an empathetic approach and accessibility to anyone who has the potential and zeal to excel in this creative field.

Bringing a breath of fresh air and hope is, Arté Makeup Academy – the labour of love of an enterprising team that is headed by Mrs. Joline Keziah, Founder. The venture was started with a vision to provide a holistic approach for makeup education and built on a solid ground that lays emphasis on knowledge accessibility for all. The doors of Arté Makeup Academy were opened on 9th September 2021 at Anna Nagar, Chennai.

Makeup is known to enhance one’s beauty. However, it is also a creative expression that helps to transform a person’s look – be it for an editorial shoot, bridal makeup or even for the runway. To do so effectively, one needs to be trained and understand the face well alongwith the tools, techniques, products and trends. Magic is thus created when one can successfully decipher the brief of their client and turning an idea into reality. This is the true definition of art and hence the name artist is attested to Makeup Artist. When technique is mastered, one truly becomes a Master of the Craft.

With 11 years of experience as a makeup artist, Mrs. Joline’s repertoire of work includes well-known names in the business like Revlon Inc., Lakme and MAC Cosmetics. Despite taking up her dream job, the enterprising Mrs. Joline harboured a vision to start her own entrepreneurial venture someday. Initially Mrs. Joline started her teaching stint through the online medium to share her accumulated knowledge as a makeup artist. This boosted her confidence to go ahead and start a brick and mortar institute as a more practical approach.

During its nascent stages Arté Makeup Academy comprised of 3 members Mrs .Joline her husband Mr.Dhilip and their friend Mr.Shriyas and has now grown to a strong team of 9 members. After careful analysis of student requirements and current availability in the market, the 9-member team of Arté Makeup Academy resolved to create sustainable solutions that ensured access to makeup education to passionate aspirants.

As, one is aware, learning the art of makeup is not an easy task. Apart from the fees, quality products are also expensive, which discourages many aspirants from pursuing the vocation due to lack of financial aid. Then there is a fear of getting a foothold in the industry, now especially with the rate of makeup artists who are passing out every month from the other academies. Both these factors cause a hindrance for interested Candidates.

Inorder to have makeup education accessible to all, Arté Makeup Academy came up with a bunch of novel ideas. This was done to warrant aspirants to come forward and take admission without the fear of huge amount of fees. Among their foremost offering is the provision of 100% sponsorship to 10 deserving students in every batch. This initiative was designed to help enthusiastic students to pursue their dreams of becoming a makeup artist without being torn to give up on their dream. All the students will be trained by experts with considerable experience in the makeup industry and have access to workshops that will be conducted by celebrity artists. Inorder to avoid any form of bias, the students will be constantly monitored and assessed on their skills by their trainers, invigilators and artists from the very first day of their course. The grades will be decided on the accumulation of points out of 300 based on adeptness and showcase of skills learned during every class. Post the completion of the course, they will receive certificates that are internationally recognized and Government approved.

As per the sponsorship scheme, Arté Makeup Academy will absorb the 10 students for a year on part time basis. During this time, they will be involved in various projects and collaborations alongwith a monthly salary. The salary will be based on their grade. Students who earn Grade A will be eligible for a salary of INR 30,000 per month, Grade B – INR 25,000 per month and Grade C – INR 20,000 per month. This step is to ensure that they gain experience and are able to build a strong work portfolio. At the end of their 1-year stint with Arte Makeup Academy they will be able to venture on their own. This practice will ensure that they find a firm ground to practice their craft and gather expertise.

Each batch will comprise of 20 students. Though there are a number of courses in the pipeline, Arté Makeup Academy will started-off with 22 days of basic to professional course. It includes 4 days of theory, face shape learning with face charts and practicals. The students will also be taught different kinds of makeup like theatrical, bridal, editorial etc. Knowledge of various formulas, is an essential factor to determine selection of quality in makeup products and method will form the core of the course. The course will also lay focus on eye-makeup, lip and skin.

Though the initial batch will be taken on the basis of first come first serve basis, from the next batch admissions will be determined through an entrance exam. Since most students are complete novices and unaware about the nuances of makeup, assistance will be provided to help them prep for the entrance.

The makeup industry is thriving and has a number of sub-branches to explore. It is not just limited to bridal and women’s makeup. Inorder to explore these categories, there is a need for trained makeup artists who are well-versed with all forms of makeup and beauty types. Learning from a reputed institute is instrumental and can open myriad of opportunities – be it domestic or international avenues. Mrs. Joline states, “Arté Makeup Academy strives to find solutions to help everyone who choose to dream and are passionate about makeup irrespective of their financial background. I believe education is a tool that should be available to one and all.”
