Synopsis
“Sweetheart” follows Vasu (Rio Raj), a commitment-phobic animator whose life takes a sudden turn when his girlfriend Manu (Gopika Ramesh) reveals she is pregnant. Struggling with his childhood baggage and emotional insecurities, Vasu is forced to confront his fears of responsibility and commitment. However, instead of a heartwarming or insightful journey, the film gets lost in an overindulgence of flashbacks, poorly executed humor, and unnecessary detours that make it more exhausting than entertaining.
Direction & Narrative Issues
Director Swineeth S. Kumar appears to be caught in a web of his own making, stretching a simple romantic comedy into a convoluted mess. Instead of focusing on character depth and emotional arcs, the film spends too much time on redundant flashbacks, overcomplicated subplots, and unconvincing humor.
The pregnancy confirmation subplot, which should have been resolved quickly, takes up the entire first half of the film. The constant time jumps and backstories feel more like a distraction than a necessity, making it difficult for the audience to stay engaged. What could have been a straightforward and engaging romantic comedy turns into a tiresome experience, leaving viewers more frustrated than invested.
Comedy That Falls Flat
A major flaw in Sweetheart is its misplaced humor. The film tries hard to elicit laughs, but most of the jokes feel repetitive and forced. Senthil, Vasu’s sidekick, embodies this problem perfectly. His over-the-top antics, exaggerated reactions, and never-ending phone gags do more to test patience than to entertain.
Adding to the absurdity is a child character in Manu’s household who seems to have an unnatural obsession with monitoring her every move. The exaggerated portrayal of this “spy” child feels out of place, almost like a subplot from a different genre entirely. Instead of enhancing the film’s humor, it makes the screenplay feel cluttered and directionless.

Performances & Music
Rio Raj does a commendable job portraying Vasu’s anxiety and indecisiveness. His facial expressions and body language effectively capture the stress of a man caught between fear and responsibility. However, even his performance cannot salvage a script that fails to give his character proper development.
Gopika Ramesh shines despite the film’s shortcomings. She brings warmth and sincerity to Manu’s role, making her a character you want to root for, even when the screenplay doesn’t give her much room to grow.
Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music serves as the film’s saving grace. His vibrant score injects much-needed energy and emotion into otherwise lackluster scenes. If there’s one thing that stands out in Sweetheart, it’s the soundtrack.
