Set in ancient Valluvanadu, the film follows Thiruvalluvar, who not only teaches Tamil to the youth but also composes poetic couplets in the unique Venba meter and begins compiling them into a book. His beloved wife Vasuki stands by him as a pillar of support. Hoping for recognition, she presents some of his couplets to the Madurai Tamil Sangam, only to be rejected as they do not conform to their traditional formats.
Despite the setback, Thiruvalluvar continues his work, believing that his writings are not merely for a literary circle but are universal truths that will benefit all of humanity. Meanwhile, political conspiracies in small kingdoms lead to the fall of righteous kings and the rise of tyrants. Distressed by this, people seek a savior.
Though Thiruvalluvar despises war and bloodshed, he becomes involved in efforts to dethrone the oppressive king and restore good governance. Thus, he journeys on two parallel missions — writing the Thirukkural and fighting for the welfare of the people. Will his book be accepted? Will the war bring the change he hopes for? The film answers these questions with heart and grace.
Just as Sivaji Ganesan became synonymous with Veerapandiya Kattabomman, Kalai Chozhan as Thiruvalluvar and Danalakshmi as Vasuki are sure to etch their characters into public memory. Kalai Chozhan beautifully embodies wisdom, compassion, authority, and resilience — traits we often only imagine through Thiruvalluvar’s statues and books. He brings the poet to life with depth and dignity.
Danalakshmi, as Vasuki, is the perfect choice — her expressive face and nuanced acting capture the spirit of a supportive, intelligent, and strong companion.
Guna Babu and Padini Kumar, as the warrior-lovers Parithi and Pavala Kodi, add not just romance but also a sense of honor and valor to the story. Their performances strike a fine balance of charm and intensity.
Suganya (as Maattathi) and Chandru (as Sangumaran) bring to life the concept of inter-caste marriages that existed even during the Sangam era, portraying it with cultural sensitivity and literary resonance.
OAK Sundar as the Pandya king, Subramaniya Siva as Nakkeerar, Kottachi as poet Perundhalaichathanar, Aravind Aandavar as Kumanan, Karthi as Nannan, Yasar as Parithi’s friend, and Karthi as the war machinery coordinator — all deliver performances that suit their roles and strengthen the narrative.
Ilayaraja’s music, both songs and background score, perfectly matches the Sangam era, adding richness and soul to the film. The background score enhances the emotional and aesthetic depth of the scenes.
Cinematographer Edwin Sakai, despite working within budget constraints, paints the screen with lush greens and tranquil streams, offering both visual comfort and beauty.
Art director Suresh Kalery and costume designer Suresh Kumar create an authentic and immersive world that transports the audience into Thiruvalluvar’s time.
The story, screenplay, and dialogues by Sembur K. Jayaraj breathe life into a speculative yet respectful imagining of how the Thirukkural may have been born — capturing the philosophical, emotional, and political climate that surrounded its creation.
Director AJ Balakrishnan skillfully brings together history, love, war, generosity, and intrigue — all while anchoring the narrative in the timeless wisdom of the Thirukkural. He offers a film that is engaging, meaningful, and deeply rooted in Tamil identity.
The film firmly reiterates that Thiruvalluvar was not just a poet but a visionary who laid down principles for individual conduct and governance. It also makes a strong case that the Thirukkural is not just another work of literature but a supreme creation that transcends time, deserving universal respect.
Overall, Thirukkural is a proud cinematic tribute to Tamil heritage — a film that honors a text that has shaped ethical thought for centuries. A must-watch for all who value history, philosophy, and timeless wisdom.
