A Unique Survival Thriller with a Strong Heart
Written and directed by Ashraf, Photographer takes a simple passion and turns it into an intense journey through the dangerous forests of Kodaikanal. The film follows Veera, an aspiring photographer with OCD, who enters the restricted Mathikettan Sholai in search of the mysterious “Golden Tree.” What begins as a dream gradually becomes a challenging fight for survival.
Ashraf brings honesty and vulnerability to the character of Veera. His portrayal of a man who struggles with fear, anxiety, and obsessive habits makes the survival portions more engaging because the audience understands how far he has moved away from his comfort zone. His performance also reflects Veera’s determination to prove himself and follow his passion.
Janani Saminathan makes a positive impact as Dharshini. Though her character has limited screen time, she brings warmth and emotional support to the narrative. Her relationship with Veera helps establish the protagonist’s personal side and gives the story a softer emotional layer amid the forest adventure.
Karunakaran provides lively support as Kabilan, Veera’s close friend. His natural comic timing offers a welcome relief in the early portions and makes the city-based scenes more enjoyable. At the same time, his character contributes to Veera’s journey instead of existing only for humour.
The biggest strength of Photographer is its forest setting. The visuals capture the beauty, isolation, and danger of Mathikettan Sholai, creating an immersive survival atmosphere.
