Chennai, 8th June, 2025. Greenpeace India marked World Oceans Day 2025 with a powerful celebration at Besant Nagar Beach in Chennai, where around 30 volunteers came together for an early morning beach cleanup drive. A striking art of an Olive Ridley turtle was displayed to highlight the critical role the ocean plays in sustaining biodiversity, regulating the climate, and supporting coastal communities. The action also comes in solidarity with the Kerala population and the urgent need for transparency, cleanup, and accountability in response to the recent shipwreck accident and its ongoing consequences.
This year, World Ocean Day precedes the opening of the United Ocean Conference, from 9th to 13th June in France, where world leaders will convene to discuss their commitments for the protection of the global ocean. In the meantime, the dramatic impacts of the recent MSC ELSA 3 shipwreck offshore Kerala (on May 25th) keep unfolding with fuel and hazardous cargo threats looming at sea, while broken containers of unknown cargo and insane amounts of plastic pellets have been washing ashore in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, India — amid monsoon weather conditions impeding initial environmental assessment and clean-up initiatives. Just 4 years after the X-Press Pearl disaster in Sri Lanka, the region’s marine life, unique coastal ecosystems, and fisher communities are facing yet another shipping disaster with lasting consequences, of which the scale remains to be fully understood.
“From the sands of Besant Nagar to the shores of Kerala, the ocean connects us all. Today’s cleanup drive in Chennai was not just about collecting waste — it was a moment of collective care, led by local volunteers who know the ocean is their lifeline. As Chennai’s coast faces increasing plastic pollution and rising sea levels, our solidarity with Kerala’s fisherfolk is a reminder that ocean protection begins at home. The MSC shipwreck has severely impacted marine biodiversity and threatened livelihoods along the coasts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. We urgently need accountability for the MSC disaster, but we also need long-term investment in building coastal resilience,” said Yasin Fahmidha, Campaigner at Greenpeace India.
“We are calling on local authorities and the MSC company to release the full cargo manifest of the MSC ELSA 3. The people in South India have the right to know and expect a detailed statement on the circumstances of the accident, as well as a comprehensive clean-up and compensation plan from MSC, who have not yet communicated two weeks after the shipwreck. When the decarbonization of the shipping industry and global plastics pollution are discussed at the UN Ocean Conference, major profitable shipping companies such as MSC can no longer shy away from their responsibility in such disasters, whereas marine life is choking on plastic pellets and fishing communities are being starved out,” added Amruta s Nair, Campaigner at Greenpeace India.
In Solidarity, Greenpeace deployed a documentation team in Kerala straight after the disaster — and this past week the organization has run several activities with ocean stakeholders, youth groups, and fisherfolks to convey the same message across the region: “One Ocean, Many Lives” in Khulna, Bangladesh; Galle and Colombo, in Sri Lanka; Odisha and Chennai, in India.
“With these events to celebrate World Ocean Day, we also want to deliver a joint message of hope together with our partners across the region. We demand our leaders quickly ratify the global High Seas Treaty to protect 30% of our oceans [1], as well as listen to the voice of small-scale fishers and the wisdom of coastal communities for the sustainable management of coastal resources and bottom-up profits to the local economies,” says Anita Perera, Campaigner at Greenpeace South Asia.

இந்த ஆண்டு, ஜூன் 9 முதல் 13 வரை பிரான்சில் நடைபெறும் ஐக்கிய பெருங்கடல் மாநாட்டின் தொடக்கத்திற்கு முன்னதாக உலகப் பெருங்கடல் தினம் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. உலகப் பெருங்கடலைப் பாதுகாப்பதற்கான தங்கள் உறுதிப்பாடுகளைப் பற்றி விவாதிக்க உலகத் தலைவர்கள் இங்கு கூடுவார்கள். இதற்கிடையில், சமீபத்தில் கேரளாவின் கடற்கரையில் (மே 25 அன்று) ஏற்பட்ட MSC ELSA 3 கப்பல் விபத்து காரணமாக ஏற்பட்ட வியத்தகு தாக்கங்கள் தொடர்ந்து அதிகரித்து வருகின்றன, எரிபொருள் மற்றும் அபாயகரமான பொருட்களின் அச்சுறுத்தல்கள் கடலில் உள்ளன, அதே நேரத்தில் தெரியாத பொருட்ளின் உடைந்த கொள்கலன்கள் மற்றும் அதீத அளவு பிளாஸ்டிக் துகள்கள் இந்தியாவின் கேரளா மற்றும் தமிழ்நாட்டில் கரை ஒதுங்குகின்றன – பருவமழை காலம் ஆரம்ப சுற்றுச்சூழல் மதிப்பீடு மற்றும் சுத்திகரிப்பு முயற்சிகளைத் தடுக்கிறது. இலங்கையில் எக்ஸ்-பிரஸ் பேர்ல் பேரழிவுக்கு 4 ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு, பிராந்தியத்தின் கடல்வாழ் உயிரினங்கள், தனித்துவமான கடலோர சுற்றுச்சூழல் அமைப்புகள் மற்றும் மீனவர் சமூகங்கள் நீடித்த விளைவுகளைக் கொண்ட மற்றொரு கப்பல் பேரழிவை எதிர்கொள்கின்றன, அதன் அளவு இன்னும் முழுமையாகப் புரிந்து கொள்ளப்படவில்லை.
பெசன்ட் நகர் மணல் பரப்பிலிருந்து கேரளக் கடற்கரை வரை, கடல் நம் அனைவரையும் இணைக்கிறது. சென்னையில் இன்றைய தூய்மைப்படுத்தும் பணி வெறும் கழிவுகளைச் சேகரிப்பது மட்டுமல்ல – கடல்தான் அவர்களின் உயிர்நாடி என்பதை அறிந்த உள்ளூர் தன்னார்வலர்கள் தலைமையிலான கூட்டுப் பராமரிப்பின் தருணமாகவும் இது அமைந்தது. சென்னையின் கடற்கரைகள் அதிகரித்து வரும் பிளாஸ்டிக் மாசுபாட்டையும் கடல் மட்ட உயர்வுகளையும் எதிர்கொண்டு வரும் நிலையில், கேரள மீனவர்களுடனான நமது ஒற்றுமை மற்றும் கடல் பாதுகாப்பு வீட்டிலிருந்தே தொடங்குகிறது என்பதை நினைவூட்டுகிறது. எம்எஸ்சி கப்பல் விபத்து கடல் பல்லுயிர் பெருக்கத்தை கடுமையாக பாதித்துள்ளது மற்றும் கேரளா மற்றும் தமிழக கடற்கரைகளில் வாழ்வாதாரத்தை அச்சுறுத்தியுள்ளது. “எம்எஸ்சி பேரழிவிற்கு நாம் அவசரமாக பொறுப்புக்கூற வேண்டும், அதே நேரத்தில் கடலோர மீள்தன்மையை உருவாக்குவதில் நீண்டகால முதலீடும் தேவை,” என்று கிரீன்பீஸ் இந்தியாவின் பிரச்சாரகர் யாசின் ஃபஹ்மிதா கூறினார்.
“MSC ELSA 3 இன் அனைத்து பொருட்கள் பற்றிய அறிக்கையை வெளியிடுமாறு உள்ளூர் அதிகாரிகளையும் MSC நிறுவனத்தையும் நாங்கள் கேட்டுக்கொள்கிறோம். தென்னிந்தியாவில் உள்ள மக்களுக்கு விபத்துக்கான சூழ்நிலைகள் குறித்த விரிவான அறிக்கையையும், கப்பல் விபத்துக்கு இரண்டு வாரங்களுக்குப் பிறகும் இன்னும் தொடர்பு கொள்ளாத MSC-யிடமிருந்து விரிவான சுத்தம் செய்தல் மற்றும் இழப்பீட்டுத் திட்டத்தையும் அறிந்துகொள்ளவும் எதிர்பார்க்கவும் உரிமை உண்டு. கப்பல் துறையின் கார்பனேற்றம் மற்றும் உலகளாவிய பிளாஸ்டிக் மாசுபாடு ஆகியவை ஐ.நா. பெருங்கடல் மாநாட்டில் விவாதிக்கப்படும்போது, MSC போன்ற பெரிய லாபகரமான கப்பல் நிறுவனங்கள் இதுபோன்ற பேரழிவுகளில் தங்கள் பொறுப்பிலிருந்து இனி விலகிச் செல்ல முடியாது, அதே நேரத்தில் கடல்வாழ் உயிரினங்கள் பிளாஸ்டிக் துகள்களால் மூச்சுத் திணறி வருகின்றன, மேலும் மீன்பிடி சமூகங்கள் பட்டினியால் வாடுகின்றன, ”என்று கிரீன்பீஸ் இந்தியாவின் பிரச்சாரகர் அம்ருதாஸ் நாயர் கூறினார்.
பேரழிவுக்குப் பிறகு உடனடியாக கேரளாவில் கிரீன்பீஸ் ஒரு ஆவணக் குழுவை நியமித்தது – கடந்த வாரம் இந்த அமைப்பு கடல்சார் பங்குதாரர்கள், இளைஞர் குழுக்கள் மற்றும் மீனவர்களுடன் இணைந்து பிராந்தியம் முழுவதும் ஒரே செய்தியை தெரிவிக்க “ஒரு பெருங்கடல், பல உயிர்கள்”; எனும் தலைப்பில் வங்காளதேசத்தின் குல்னாவில்; இலங்கையில் காலி மற்றும் கொழும்பு; இந்தியாவில் ஒடிசா மற்றும் சென்னை ஆகிய இடங்களில் பல நிகழ்வுகளை நடத்தியது.
