Mirth and Joy marked Aadi Perukku Celebrations held today (1st Aug. 2022) at Dr. MGR-Janaki Arts and Science College for Women. Participation of students clad in traditional half-sarees and sarees added more colour to the event.

Women floating earthen lamps in the pond set up for the festivity; students feasting on variety rice including Chitra annam and other home-made delicacies; girls carrying mulaipari of navadhanyams; pooja rituals among other activities were lively and feast to the eyes. Nearly 2000 students of the college took part in the celebration.

The highlight of the event was ‘sandhai’ recreated with bangle sellers, parrot fortune-telling, mehandi and cotton candy vendors, porridge vendors and more that brought live the charm of village atmosphere.

To add to the festivity, students performed traditional folk dances during the occasion and included Karagattam, Oyilattam and Kummi. District-wise cultural dress competition for students across departments. Altogether it was a spectacular sight and replication of celebrations indigenous to villages.

“Preserving our tradition and knowing our roots is important for human race to progress and leave in peace. Celebrations like this will help younger generation know our tradition and pass on it to future generation. This is our little attempt towards preserving the Tamil culture. Also, the ‘sandhai’ concept with stalls fully managed by students will help nurture their marketing and entrepreneurial skills” said Dr. Kumar Rajendran, Chairman, Dr. MGR Janaki College for Women.
