Plot Overview:
The film revolves around the tense relationship between stepbrothers Essaki (Pawan) and Sankarapandian (Aadukalam Naren), who are locked in a conflict over their deceased father’s last rites. Their father’s body is being transported by ambulance driver Kumar (Vemal) to their village in Tirunelveli. Kumar is in urgent need of money due to his pregnant wife (Mary Rickets) in the hospital. He reluctantly agrees to give a lift to theatre artist Nalinamurthy (Karunas), who helps him push his malfunctioning van.
As the journey progresses, Kumar faces a series of mishaps, culminating in the shocking theft of the corpse. With both families waiting for the body, the story unfolds into a gripping cat-and-mouse game. Kumar’s quest to retrieve the stolen corpse forms the crux of the film.
Review:
“Pogumidam Vegu Thooramillai” presents a unique blend of dark humor and drama, engaging the audience with its intriguing plot and character dynamics. The film starts slowly, but picks up momentum in the second half with a compelling narrative.
While the attempts at humor in the mortuary van scenes fall flat, the action and dramatic sequences are executed well, providing thrilling moments. The film’s rural setting and the talented supporting cast add authenticity and depth to the story.
Karunas delivers a standout performance as Nalinamurthy, skillfully balancing comedy with emotional depth. Vemal, as Kumar, portrays his character with a sense of gravity, effectively conveying the desperation of a man trapped by circumstances. The interplay between the characters and the unfolding drama keep the audience engaged.
However, the film’s frequent shifts between dark humor and intense drama occasionally detract from the suspense, affecting the overall impact. Despite this, the touching climax and the film’s subtle message leave a lasting impression.
Verdict:
Overall, “Pogumidam Vegu Thooramillai” is an engaging watch with a mix of humor, emotion, and family sentiment. Its interesting storyline and effective screenplay make it worth the watch, even if it sometimes struggles with tone consistency.
